Spring Bear Essentials

Spring bear hunting in the northwestern United States can be an exciting and challenging experience. With the right gear, you can make your hunt more comfortable and successful. Here are some essential items to bring on your spring bear hunt:

1. Hunting Rifle or Bow: Your choice of weapon is crucial to the success of your hunt. Choose a reliable hunting rifle or bow that is comfortable for you to carry and shoot. Ensure that you have practiced with your weapon before heading out on the hunt.

2. Ammunition or Arrows: Ensure that you have enough ammunition or arrows for your hunt. Check the laws and regulations regarding ammunition and arrow types for your specific hunting area.

3. Kill Kit: A good hunting knife is essential for field dressing and processing your kill. Choose a sharp and durable knife that is comfortable to hold. Also, you may want to bring other items such as a knife sharpener or replaceable blades, rubber gloves, cordage, gamebags, a ground tarp (we prefer a Multicloth) and flagging tape. If you don’t have a kill kit, we have a great kit on our site. Our kit is called the ”Bighole Kill Kit”.

4. Backpack: A durable and comfortable backpack is essential for carrying your gear and any necessary supplies. Choose a backpack with ample space for your equipment and hunting gear. You will want to bring a pack that is durable and is comfortable to carry with a heavy load.

5. Binoculars or Spotting Scope: A quality pair of binoculars or spotting scope can help you spot game from a distance. Choose glass that is lightweight and easy to use. Bears tend to move methodically and slowly during the spring season, grazing on grasses and other vegetation. You will likely spot them from a long way off and have to close the distance.

6. Hunting Boots: Comfortable and durable hunting boots are essential for traversing rugged terrain. Choose a pair that is waterproof and has good traction. If your feet get cold easily, you may want to consider a boot with light insulation since you may spend a lot of time sitting and glassing. We have found that bears like the areas just below the snow line so it may be chilly.

7. Clothing: Dress in layers to stay comfortable in changing weather conditions. Choose clothing that is durable, comfortable, and blends in with your surroundings. A lightweight rain jacket is also a good idea in case of unexpected rain. Last year, we spent days in a tent because it was downpouring rain. Also, be sure to check your local hunting regulations to see if you have to wear orange.

8. GPS and Compass: A GPS and compass can help you navigate through unfamiliar terrain. Make sure that you know how to use both before heading out on the hunt. If you are using an Inreach feature, test it before you go out! I almost had search and rescue called for me because no one was receiving my messages.

9. First Aid Kit: Accidents can happen, so it’s essential to bring a first aid kit. Pack bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any necessary medication. Check out this video to help give you ideas for what you may want to carry. First Aid Kit Link

10. Camping Gear- If you are going to be spending multiple days out in the wilds, we would suggest that you bring quality camping gear. You may want to bring items such as; a shelter, sleeping pad, quilt or sleeping bag with a warm enough rating for the elements (check out this blog for information about choosing the proper sleeping gear for you. Choose your sleep system) You should also bring food, and a way to heat the food. Also you will want to bring plenty of water or a way to filter/purify water. It is a good idea to bring a tarp to sit under if the rain should hit or to block the sun for prolonged periods of glassing.

Obviously, we are bias on which gear you should select and if asked what brand of camping gear someone should look at bringing, we would say, VIAM Outdoors. We have shelters, tarps, kill kits, pack organizer bags (G3 Bags), quilts, gamebags and much more. Browse through the site to find whatever you need for your next bear hunt!

It’s important to not only consider the gear and equipment necessary for a successful hunt, but also to prioritize safety, respect for wildlife, and adherence to local hunting regulations. Wishing you good and safe hunting!
